The accident happened when Isaac and Eva were out playing on a break from school. The had been riding their bikes up and down the driveway, and then Isaac came in and asked to get his BB gun out. Somehow, a BB bounced off a branch and hit Eva's eye.
After trips to two different hospitals, they have found that the BB hit the eye but did not penetrate it. It hit the pupil directly and they can see an indentation the exact side of the BB. It shaved off the cornea and detached the iris. She has had a severe bleed in her eye. The good news is that the retina has not been damaged. But, she is still at risk for a detached retina and has to be very still until she goes back to the doctor on Sunday morning. She is also still at risk for having another bleed, and in that case, they will have to do surgery to relieve pressure on the eye.
~Update~
We took Eva in to the doctor today and instead of her sight becoming clearer like they thought, she now has no vision out of her eye except for being able to distinguish movement and recognize light. My mom probably could explain it more, but for now they are sending her up to Children's Memorial in Chicago...
~Update from Sunday, October 18~
Eva, Therese and my Mom headed up to Chicago this evening, where Eva will be seeing a specialist and having surgery. They have not actually scheduled the surgery yet, since this happened over the weekend, but it is likely that she will be having it tomorrow. They will be reattaching the iris, washing the eye and removing a cataract that has already formed. Everyone's really wanting to do the surgery soon because of a blood clot that is in her eye. When this starts to break up, it will be intensely painful and cause a lot of pressure in the eye, which could lead to more severe problems. So, they are hoping to resolve all of that before it becomes an issue.
I will try to keep updates over here. Go to their Family Blog and let them know that you're praying for them!
